Red abrasions on elephantnose tail leads to death?!?

I recently purchased an elepahantnose fish for 20 dollers!) from my LFS. Two days later i found him dead on my surface with a soar tail. He was in a 50 gallon community tank that was very well planted. Can this red tail come from stress?? Or was he being bullied?? Or is this a disease??
